The Last Dance Memorial
(In loving memory of Rod Roark, 9/22/66-12/25/14)
A Daughter's Heart - 2003
The father & daughter took their place in the middle of a crowded floor, with people all around them, yet it was as if they were the only ones in the room. Hands clasped tightly together, they lovingly danced to the soft music playing in the distance. Their steps were in perfect sync & their eyes spoke volumes…of tenderness, of history, of hopes & dreams, challenges & commitment. Intently fixed on the other’s gaze, the pair’s obvious & deep connection unknowingly blessed those in observance. The dance itself was simple, yet their sweet relationship was what made it so profound; he, though requiring a back-brace, still gently lead, as she gracefully followed. And as the night wore on & their legs grew tired, the duo continued to move in unison until the final song played. Although they had been to a few other events like this in years gone by, the two of them knew full-well that this one was different, more special than ever before…this, you see, would indeed be their last dance. For amidst the noisy crowd & their own affectionate laughter, both daddy & daughter quietly understood what others nearby did not… Stage IV cancer abounded in the outwardly healthy-looking man, & the memories made that particular evening would soon come to be ones the young lady needed to hold onto for a lifetime.
A Daughter's Heart - 2008
Yes, this couple was more than a stunning sight to behold that night; more importantly, they were a display of Godly heritage & unshaken faith. And the beautiful young woman was given the greatest gift anyone could ever receive~ that of a terminally ill father’s deep pledge to honor his little girl with ONE FINAL PUBLIC SHOWING of his time, love & dedication. No, their dance was not merely for enjoyment; instead, it was for a daughter to see her earthly father exemplify what her Heavenly Father will now tenderly carry out for the remainder of her days—that of being a shelter in the storms life inevitably brings, warmth in even the coldest of trials, a true companion in the midst of intense difficulty.
A Daughter's Heart - 2011
The tune continued to play on, &, in time, every watching soul was stirred beyond words by the strong bond between the man & his only daughter. This certainly was a dance to remember: a legacy of steadfast love to emulate; a commitment not merely to another person, but to the Composer of Life Himself. There was even a sense of holiness to it all, for their JOY in the Lord was overwhelming, their demonstration of firm HOPE unwavering, & the indescribable PEACE of God upon them palpable. Out of what others would simply call heartache came a proclamation of God’s sovereignty, its impact only fully known in eternity.
A Daughter's Heart - 2014
And although you may not have been witness to the song & dance of these dear ones, it is our prayer that their testimony rings loud & clear in your heart & mind today. For theirs is a beat worth following~ strumming loudly the sounds of sacrificial love, graceful steps & supernatural peace, & very much like that of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
